OB's food scene is casual, beachy, and walkable — think fish tacos, breakfast burritos, fresh seafood, craft beer, and coffee, mostly clustered along Newport Avenue and the surrounding streets. You'll find everything from quick taco counters to sit-down spots with patios, plus a few longtime local favorites mixed in with newer kitchens.

Newport Avenue is OB's main strip — a short, flat, very walkable stretch running toward the beach. Along it you'll find independent restaurants and cafés, coffee shops, breweries and bars, surf and vintage shops, and the kind of small local stores OB is known for. It's the easiest place to get a feel for the neighborhood.

The best approach is simply to park once and explore on foot. To see what's there before you go, check the directory or the Restaurants tab.

Yes — OB has a relaxed but lively bar and brewery scene, with plenty of spots along and around Newport Avenue. Many places run happy hours and some host live music, so there's usually something going on in the evenings without it feeling too crowded.

The Ocean Beach Farmers Market is a weekly community event held on Newport Avenue, with produce vendors, food stalls, local makers, and live music filling the street. It runs every Wednesday from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, year-round, rain or shine — though times can shift seasonally, so check the current schedule before you head over.

Yes. Dog Beach, at the north end of Ocean Beach where the San Diego River meets the ocean, is the City of San Diego's only designated 24-hour off-leash beach, so dogs are welcome without a leash any time of day. The easiest access is the Dog Beach parking lot at the west end of Voltaire Street.

Keep in mind that off-leash rules apply only to that designated Dog Beach area — on the rest of Ocean Beach standard dog rules apply and are enforced. So leash up once you leave the zone, and always clean up after your dog.

Ocean Beach water is cooler than a lot of visitors expect, and it changes with the season. As a rough guide it tends to run from the upper-50s °F in winter to the upper-60s °F in late summer, but the day-to-day temperature moves around a lot with wind and upwelling.

Yes — Ocean Beach is a popular spot for both swimming and surfing, and lifeguards are on duty. Conditions vary day to day, though: rip currents and surf size change with the swell and the weather, so follow posted signs and lifeguard guidance while you're out.

Water quality can vary, especially after rain near the San Diego River mouth and Dog Beach, where runoff tends to collect. The County issues beach advisories when needed, so it's a good idea to check for any current advisories before you swim.

You can see the latest water-quality information on the Weather tab, and the County's beach water-quality program is the place to confirm current conditions before getting in.

No. Alcohol is not allowed on San Diego city beaches, boardwalks, or adjacent parking lots, including at Ocean Beach. There is a permanent ban on alcohol on the sand, and it's enforced — so plan to enjoy a drink at one of OB's bars or restaurants instead.

Glass containers are also prohibited on the beach regardless of what's in them.

Ocean Beach has had fire rings near the area south of the pier in the past, but availability changes and they fill up fast — first-come, first-served. Only wood and charcoal are typically allowed (no pallets or treated wood), and rules can change seasonally.

Because the count and rules vary, check the City's current beach fire information before you plan a bonfire night.

The Ocean Beach tide pools are south of the pier, along the rocky shelf toward the Sunset Cliffs end. They're best explored at low tide, when the rocks and pools are exposed.

Go carefully: the rocks are slippery, the surf can surge without warning, and an incoming tide can cut off the shelf. Check a tide chart, keep an eye on the water, wear grippy shoes, and look but don't take — the tide pools are a protected habitat.

Yes — MTS Route 35 ("Ocean Beach – Old Town") runs through the OB village and connects to the Old Town Transit Center, where you can pick up the Trolley and COASTER. On weekdays, Route 923 also links Ocean Beach to Downtown. Routes and times change, so check sdmts.com for the current schedule before you go.

Most OB street parking is free — there are no City meters in OB — but some blocks have posted time limits or residential rules, so always check the signs. Spots fill fast on sunny days and weekends; if free lots near the beach are full, there are several paid lots a few blocks back. Prices and rules vary, so check posted signage before you park.

San Diego International Airport is a short drive away, and Ocean Beach sits in the western corner of the city near the mouth of the San Diego River. Driving and rideshare are both straightforward, and you can follow signs toward Ocean Beach once you're headed west.

Not really. OB's core — Newport Avenue, the beach, and the pier area — is compact and walkable, so once you've parked you can largely get around on foot. Biking is common too, and it's an easy, flat neighborhood to explore without moving the car.

Ocean Beach has a mix of lodging in and around the neighborhood — everything from hostels to vacation rentals and hotels — so there's usually something to fit most styles and budgets. Options and availability change throughout the year, especially in summer.

If OB is booked up, nearby San Diego coastal neighborhoods are a short trip away and tend to offer more lodging. Areas like Point Loma, Mission Beach, and Pacific Beach are all close by and can be good fallbacks while still keeping you near the coast.

OB has a steady stream of community happenings throughout the year. The weekly OB Farmers Market on Newport Avenue is the reliable standby — typically Wednesday afternoons and into the evening, though times can shift seasonally, so check the current schedule before you head over. On top of that, the neighborhood hosts seasonal street fairs and community gatherings as the year goes on.

Generally, yes to both. OB is famously dog-friendly — Dog Beach at the north end is a well-known off-leash spot (see the Beach & Water section for details on access and rules). The beach and pier area are easy to explore on foot, and the weekly Farmers Market on Newport Avenue is a family-friendly outing with food, local makers, and music.

As with any beach day, keep an eye on surf conditions and posted signs, and leash up once you leave the designated Dog Beach area.

Dog Beach is reached from the Dog Beach parking lot at the west end of Voltaire Street, which connects to the sand at the north end of Ocean Beach. The City has worked to improve beach access here over the years; for the current condition of ramps and pathways, check sandiego.gov or call the City's accessibility line before you visit.

Temporary access mats are sometimes used to firm up a path across the sand near the main beach, though availability changes seasonally and isn't guaranteed. The City of San Diego also runs a free Beach Wheelchair Program, and Ocean Beach is one of the beaches served — manual beach wheelchairs are generally available from lifeguards at the Ocean Beach Lifeguard Station when they're on duty. Power beach wheelchairs are offered at select San Diego beaches. Accessible restrooms and accessible parking are generally available in the Ocean Beach area near the beach and lifeguard station. Specific availability can change, so watch for posted accessible-parking signage when you arrive, or check sandiego.gov.

The City of San Diego runs an ADA Right-of-Way Project that identifies and prioritizes accessibility improvements in the public right of way — curb ramps, crosswalks, pedestrian signals, and accessible on-street parking — as part of its citywide ADA transition planning.

The Ocean Beach Pier is currently closed to the public. It has been closed since storm/high-surf damage, and the City of San Diego determined that repairing it isn't feasible, so the City is moving ahead with replacing the pier rather than fixing the existing one.

The project is in the environmental review and permitting stage. The City's current estimate to design and build the new pier is roughly $170–$190 million, which the City notes is subject to change. A firm construction start and finish date hasn't been set yet — the City says the timeline will be confirmed once permitting and funding wrap up, so check the City's project page for the latest.
