The two parts of the park
The park has an 18-acre linear section along the ocean side of Sunset Cliffs Boulevard, between Adair and Ladera Streets: this is the strip of bluffs, arches and sea caves most people picture. Behind it is a 50-acre hillside section, a protected habitat area that connects to the Point Loma Ecological Reserve.
Best viewpoints
- Ladera Street: at the south end, a popular sunset spot (and wedding spot).
- Luscomb Point: named after a local surfing figure, with views over the surf breaks.
- Osprey Street area: another favorite for sunset viewing.
- The walk north toward OB: the bluffs between Adair Street and the park are lined with arches and coves.
When to go
- Sunset, obviously. Arrive 30–45 minutes early to find parking and a spot.
- December to April for whales. California gray whales pass close to the Point Loma coast on their migration between Alaska and Baja California.
- Low tide for the coves. Some tide pools and coves below the cliffs are only reachable at low tide. Check our low-tide calendar.
Stay safe on the cliffs
The sandstone bluffs are soft and erode constantly. Edges can collapse without warning, and people are injured falling from them.
- Stay on established paths and well back from the edge, especially for photos.
- Don't climb down unofficial trails or the cliff face.
- Keep kids and dogs close.
- Watch the waves if you go down to the rocks: sets can surge higher than expected.
Parking and getting there
From OB, drive south on Sunset Cliffs Boulevard; street parking and small lots line the road along the park. They fill at sunset on weekends. From central OB, it's a pleasant 20–30 minute walk south along the bluffs. There are no restrooms at the park, so plan ahead.
